The second domino has fallen.
Following a breakout sophomore season, sharpshooting guard and second-leading scorer Noah Baumann told The Spear Monday that he will transfer away from San Jose State. The news comes just days after the team’s top scorer, Michael Steadman, announced his intent to transfer.
“I really wish San Jose State the best,” Baumann said. “My main goal here was just to win.”
In his two years in a Spartan uniform, the team won just eight games. SJSU was a combined 2-33 against Mountain West opponents over that span.
“As a sophomore I have two more years of eligibility,” he said. “I was just looking out for myself and my family and I think transferring is probably the best option.”
Baumann’s season was a bright spot of a dark period at SJSU. He set the school record for 3-pointers in a season with 81. He was ranked first in the NCAA for a time in 3-point shooting percentage, ultimately finishing at an outstanding mark of 45 percent.
He shared his appreciation for the fans that supported him during his time at the school.
“To the loyal fans, I really do thank them,” Baumann said. “The last two years will definitely be something I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
As for the Spartans and head coach Jean Prioleau, the loss of Baumann leaves a massive void on the perimeter.
Brae Ivey is now the team’s top 3-point shooter. He shot the deep ball at a clip of 31 percent this past season.
Prioleau now has to replace his top two scorers, as he did just a year ago.
The offseason is normally reserved for recruiting new players to compliment the current roster. Rather than recruiting young talent, he may need to focus on keeping the talent he has on the roster.
