QB Terrell Carter “parts ways” from SJSU, opens recruitment

By Ernie Gonzalez – Football Insider

There was a point in time where the name Terrell Carter was buzzing all around San Jose State football, some even calling him the team’s future star.

The hype for Carter — now gone.

The redshirt freshman announced on Twitter shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday that he has decided to reopen his recruitment less than 48 hours until the team’s home opener against UC Davis.

“First, I would like to thank the University of San Jose’s coaching staff for taking a chance on a kid from Southeast San Diego. This past year has been full of growth and life lessons,” Carter said.  “Thank you to my Spartan football family for all of the love and support. San Jose will always hold a special place in my heart, but we have decided to part ways. With that being said, my recruitment is now open.”

Some questioned why Carter never got playing time during his freshman season, especially since the team was ballooned with injuries up and down the roster.

Something else that has many questioning is why Carter waited until game week to make his announcement.

Many are speculating it may have to do with him not winning the starting job, but Carter denied that.

“It had nothing to do with the quarterback situation,” Carter said in an exclusive interview with The Spear.

So what is it?

Well, from the outside looking in, things didn’t seem to click for 6-foot-2, 190-pound signal caller and the new coaching staff.

The San Diego, Calif. native was one of the first players by current head coach Brent Brennan in the summer of 2016.

According to the dual threat however, it was less his choice to depart SJSU than it the coaching staff.

At this time, not much can be said about what was discussed between the second-year quarterback and the coaching crew.

He had eyes all over him in high school mainly for his deep ball abilities and for knowing how to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs.

The Madison high school alum tore it up as he was ranked in the top-100 quarterbacks in the nation and in the top dozen in California, putting up 3,188 yards through the air with 34 passing touchdowns and 482 rushing yards and 5 rushing TDs that senior season.

With Carter now out of the picture, it puts the quarterback race back to redshirt sophomore Montel Aaron and fourth-year junior Josh Love and probably even gives third-year graduate student Michael Carrillo a shot.

Carter said that he “doesn’t know yet” in terms of where he sees himself playing football next.

For SJSU, the least that can be said is it shrinks the quarterback battle.

That humming noise surrounding the quarterbacks though — it’s still anything but mute.
