Mazury and Chan close the gap against UC Davis

By Madyson Montoya — Managing Editor

It was not the redemption the San Jose State gymnastics team wanted, but huge improvements were made from last week.

The Spartans fell to UC Davis by 1.075, which is better than their two point deficit last week.

SJSU did have higher scores on the beam and on the floor but those victories were not enough to take the meet.

This was Spartan gym’s fifth meet and the same patterns have been occurring.

The battle of the bars

It has continuously been proven that the bars are not a strong event for the Spartans this season. Junior Nikki Duggan is one of the strongest in the event but her last two appearances have been rough, along with her fellow teammates.

The highest score achieved on the bars was freshman Jada Mazury with a 9.800. Although it was the top score in the event, the Spartans had to record an 8.775, which brought down the team score.

This event has the most room for improvement and the ability is there. Execution is going to have to be the focus for this apparatus in particular.

Chan the champion

It is no secret that senior Taylor Chan has consistently been a top performer for SJSU since her freshman year.

Her lowest score against the Aggies was a 9.725 on bars, but she made up for it with an outstanding 9.925 on floor.

Chan is known for her 9.9 floor routines, but the meet against UC Davis was the first time she has earned above that score since 2017.

Strides are being made

It is clear that SJSU is aware of its weaknesses as it shows improvement every week.

The beam was a rough event for the Sparans in last week’s meet against UC Davis. They recorded a 47.975, whereas in the second meet they scored a 49.175.

Senior Chelsey Andrada got a season-high score of 9.875, ensuring her second beam title of the year. Mazury tied with Andrade and snagged a season best on the beam.

Despite the flaws in performance, it is a good place to be at this point in the season.

SJSU has shown that it can do better than what it has done the last two weeks and it will have another chance to prove it next Friday. The Spartans host Alaska Anchorage on Valentine’s day at 7 p.m.
