San Jose State tennis welcomed in the new season Friday afternoon with a non-conference dual matchup against Sacramento State.

The Spartans (1-0) and Hornets (0-3) had some heated matches on the afternoon, but the end result was a 6-1 Spartan victory.

SJSU secured the doubles point handily with results of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-0.

“Getting that doubles point set the tone for singles,” said head coach Chad Skorupka.

Although it was a non-conference win for the Spartans, a victory to commence the season should prove beneficial moving forward.

“I think it was definitely pretty important, to give us confidence and let us know that as a team we’re strong,” said senior Tamara Culibrk. “We can do well against good teams, get good victories and have a strong season.”

Junior Savannah Sendar echoed the sentiments of Culibrk and Skorupka after the win.

“Sac State is a tough team, they’re very scrappy,” Sendar said. “Playing well and earning the doubles point really helped heading into singles.”

One of the more notable singles matches on the afternoon was freshman Rozalina Youseva’s comeback win over SSU sophomore Jayden Nielsen 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9).

Sophomore Alba Pedrero Galindo also secured a comeback victory to gives the Spartans another singles win. She defeated SSU junior Jenna Dorian 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).

The Spartans’ next matchup will be at the University of San Francisco (2-2) on Thursday, Feb. 6 at 12 p.m.
