Spartans offense slowed down by the Redhawks

San Jose State men’s soccer (5-4-2 MW) will remain as the No. 5 seed in the WAC tournament following a 3-1 loss to conference leaders, Seattle University (9-0-1) in the season finale. 

The first goal came 31 minutes into the first half from Redhawk sophomore forward Declan McGlynn off a corner kick. 

The Spartans were outplayed in the first half of the game as the Redhawks were able gather more attacking opportunities, outshooting the Spartans 4-1 with 3 of the shots being on frame. 

SJSU looked to recollect at halftime however the second half told a similar story to the first.

Just minutes into the second half, Redhawk James Morris capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity after Spartan freshman defender Josh Redfield gave up a foul in the box. 

The momentum shifted in the Redhawks’ favor as McGlynn was red hot for the Seattle offense. 

With the assist from teammate Connor Nobalt, McGlynn was able to sneak another goal past freshman goalkeeper David Sweeney to give Seattle the 3-0 lead. 

The Spartans worked relentlessly to stay in the game. 

Junior midfielder Nicolas Brenes led the Spartan offense with 5 shots as he tried to create an offensive spark for the team. 

SJSU got on the scoreboard after a foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick. 

Junior midfielder Willy Miranda confidently stepped up to the line to place a perfectly kicked ball in the back of the net. 

The Spartans will now turn their focus to preparing for the first round of the WAC tournament on Tuesday. The opponent and time is unknown due to other games in the conference still being played.
