Friday the 13th curses women’s volleyball at home

SJSU’s women’s volleyball team put up a combative fight against the Northern Colorado Bears on September 13th.

The Spartan’s seemed to have fallen into the curse of Friday the 13th in this match. Though they lost three sets in a row, the level of play was exceptional on both sides of the net.

In the first set, the Spartans struggled to get in the game trailing behind the Bears 0-4. The Spartans were unable to find their groove dropping the set 25-14.

“We started off a little slow. We were not doing well with the game plan, but after we started executing the game plan and adding some attitude behind our offense and defense then it was good volleyball. We just didn’t maintain it,” said head coach Jolene Shepardson.

They began to pick up speed again after big blocks and explosive kills were made on their side of the net during the second set. Outside hitter Latahevai Lousi seemed to be the most prominent carrier of the energy throughout the second set. She had 10 kills total and led the team in the most kills for this game.

“We did well bringing our own energy to the game,” said Lousi.

“We’re going in the right direction, and I’m excited because we keep battling and moving in the right direction.”

Though the Spartans lost this game, the effort was apparent.

Even though they lost 25-23 in the second and third sets, the level of play increased consistently throughout.
