Baseball falls to SDSU in extra innings

San Jose State baseball (27-19, 12-9 MW) started its weekend series against San Diego State (19-27, 12-10 MW) with a devastating 7-6 loss after 11 innings.

The Aztecs defeated the Spartans as they were able to answer junior Blake Berry’s scored run and by scoring two.

SDSU scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but SJSU came back in the second to tie the game.

The Spartans then took a 4-2 lead in the fifth on an RBI double and an error. The Aztecs seemed to be struggling defensively as all four of the SJSU runs at this point were made on erros.

The Aztecs would not settle for the Spartans to have power over the game as they scored three unanswered runs to take the 5-4 lead after six innings.

A single from senior infielder Aaron Pleschner in the seventh would be the key to the Spartans securing extra innings. His base hit brought in junior Anders Davidson, making the score 5-5.

In the top of the 11th, Davidson hit a sacrifice fly to right field and gave the Spartans a 6-5 lead.

However, infielder Angelo Armenta gave the Aztecs the walk-off win on a 2-RBI double, shattering any chance of a Spartan victory.

SJSU put up a good fight in Game 1 and with that energy stands a chance to win within the next two days.

If SDSU continues to make fielding mistakes, SJSU will have no problem taking at least one of the games in the series.

The next game of the series is Saturday at 6 p.m.
