Comeback falls short, Spartans swept in San Diego

San Jose State (19-29, 12-12 MW) was swept out of town after another heartbreaking loss against San Diego State (28-19, 13-9 MW), 10-8.

The Spartans were once again doomed by walks and issues on the mound.

Junior designated hitter Blake Berry singled in senior Aaron Pleschner in the first inning to get things started for SJSU.

In the third inning, the Spartans plated another run courtesy of sophomore outfielder Connor Konishi.

Junior Nick Knecht delivered another run in the top of the fourth inning to give SJSU a 3-0 advantage.

Things fell a part in the bottom half of the fourth as seven runs crossed for the Aztecs.

Freshman Jonathan Clark was relieved by junior Nicolas Morales, but the two pitchers couldn’t prevent the Aztecs from taking the 7-3 lead.

The Spartans battled to score two more runs in the fifth to cut the lead down to 7-5.

However, three more runs crossed for SDSU in the sixth, which proved to be too much for the Spartans to come back from.

Three runs for the Spartans in the eighth were not enough to edge out the Aztecs.

The pitching staff once again could not hold off the SDSU line up. They gave up 10 hits, 10 runs and seven walks.

SJSU returns home to face Nevada in a three-game series next week.

With only two conference matchups left in the season, the Spartans will need to begin to perform if they want to remain in the top four for the conference tournament.
