The Spartan track and field team went local to compete in the Cardinal Classic, but two members were down in Long Beach for the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate.

The Cardinal Classic did bring up an opportunity for San Jose State to compete against nationally ranked teams such as Stanford, Oregon and Colorado.

It was not a busy day down in Long Beach as freshman Daja Johnson took ninth in her section of the 100 meter dash. Junior Diamond Tabron was the other competitor representing SJSU and managed to finish in eighth for the 400 meter hurdles.

The pair was small representation but two top-10 placings made the travel worth it.

As far as the Stanford meet goes, junior Jeanette Zambrano finished first in her section of the 5000 meter. Not only that, but she smoked the second place finisher by over 12 seconds.

Junior Jennifer Sandoval competed in the same event but the invite section and managed to finish with a time of 16:23.72.

When it comes to throwing, junior Silvia Gutierrez dominated with her second place finish in the hammer throw event.

The men seemed to struggle a little more on day one. None of the male runners were in any of the invite sections, but junior Jose Pina did finish in ninth for his section of the 5000 meter.

Freshman Richard Dang took second in the long jump and was the only Spartan to compete in that event.

Day two did not prove to be much better for SJSU. Senior Savanna Perez took second in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:38.24. Not far behind was junior Camilla Hanson in fourth place.

Overall, it was not a bad showing for the track and field team considering they were going against a high-level of competition.

The Spartans will have one week to rest before they compete in the Brutus Hamilton Challenge starting on Friday.
