Spartans get blown out by Cowgirls

By Daniel Reedy:

It was a rough one for the Spartans.

The San Jose State women’s basketball team was trounced by host Wyoming, 89-60.

Dezz Ramos was as good as advertised but nearly outscored the rest of her team, putting up 29 points and hitting 6/9 from range.

The other ten Spartans combined for just 31 points with Jasmine Smith and Paris Baird tying for second-most on the team with six points a piece.

Smith — who pulled down seven boards — saw her double-double streak in five consecutive conference games come to an end.

Wyoming dominated inside, out rebounding the Spartans by 10 and more than doubling the visiting team in points scored in the paint.

The Cowgirls (14-3) remain undefeated in conference play and are now outscoring Mountain West opponents by 20.2 points per game. Their 89 points was the most they have scored in nearly two years.

Wyoming’s leading scorer Liz Roberts continued her impressive year, dropping 19 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

Also posting 19 points — a new career high — was sophomore Bailee Cotton.

“[Cotton] by far had her best game, offensively and defensively,” said Wyoming head coach Joe Legerski.

Cowgirls’ freshman Taylor Rusk also scored a career-high 14 points, sniping four three-pointers in her best game of the season.

There were bright spots for SJSU, too. The Spartans only turned the ball over nine times, just once more than the Cowgirls. The visitors also only had two shots blocked while recording six blocks of their own.

Overall, the Spartans — who put up just nine points in the fourth quarter — were dreadful. Starters Myzhanique Ladd and Rachol West combined for just seven points, one assist, zero steals and were 0/5 from three-point range.

SJSU’s bench couldn’t hit from distance either, making just 1/7 from beyond the arc. Junior Hallie Gennett was 0/4 from range, and 0/5 overall.

Wyoming displayed excellent ball movement en route to 22 assists, with three players recording at least four helpers; SJSU recorded 10, led by Ramos and Smith who each had three.

The Spartans will look to rebound from the loss as they begin to head back west to Boise State. SJSU takes on the Broncos (13-4) for another tough matchup at 2 p.m.
