Three quick observations from Saturday’s scrimmage

By Ernie Gonzalez – Football Insider

San Jose State football had its first team scrimmage since the spring on Saturday on its practice field. It was the first of two fall scrimmages for the team. Below are three immediate observations on the team from Saturday.

1. It’s Aaron’s starting job to lose

The 6-foot-5 quarterback was the first on the field and did not disappoint. He came out with quick feet and never panicked. He did not miss a pass. When options failed down field, the sophomore tucked it twice for over 15 yards in his opening drive. His best ball was a 35-yard sling to senior Thai Cottrell for a touchdown. It was the best drive start to finish from a QB by a margin.

2. Young defensive backs are hungry

Redshirt freshman Johnny Balderas and true freshman Tre Jenkins each racked up an INT in the scrimmage. The most impressive however, came from the redshirt. Balderas not only went up and snagged a deep ball, but one from junior Josh Love, who already has in-game experience. Balderas is still developing, but it’s nice to see the redshirt year paying off early in the fall.

3. Malike Roberson pilots tailbacks

The senior was taken down seven yards short of the goal line on a play that began close to 45 hashmarks back on the second drive of the scrimmage. He also capped off Terrell Carter’s drive with a two-yard rush, which is also good to see. Roberson has not had a game of over 100 yards rushing since the week 10 matchup against Boise State two seasons ago. He certainly looked like the leader of the pack with the running back mix on Saturday.
