Women’s basketball leader Turney transferring out of SJSU

Sophomore starting point guard Taylor Turney will transfer out of San Jose State after two seasons with the women’s basketball program, according to a statement from her personal Twitter account.

The Henderson, Nev. native posted career-high averages of 13.1 points (second on the team), 4 assists (led team) and 2.6 rebounds per game in 25.6 minutes as a sophomore last season.

Turney thanked SJSU, the coaches, her teammates and the community, and also continued by saying, “I really appreciate the growth that I’ve gained being apart of this program and community … Now it is time to be somewhere else. I have decided to re-open my recruitment and I’m so excited to be on this new journey.”

Turney saw an extended role with the loss of one of the Spartans’ top scorers in program history Dezz Ramos, and would have continued to be the leader in the backcourt with Myzhanique Ladd just wrapping up her career.

The rebuild for SJSU continues as it was one of the youngest teams in the country last season with eight freshmen.

With the loss of Turney, the current roster sits with just one incoming upperclassman, senior Andrea Kohlhaas — who started in one game last year before tearing her ACL.

The news comes 19 days after the men’s program’s top players Ryan Welage, Jaycee Hillsman and Keith Fisher III decided to explore other options by indicating an interest to transfer.
