Women’s tennis splits weekend ending three-game winning streak

The San Jose State Spartans women’s team split matches at the the Fullerton Invitational over the weekend.

In the first of two matches on Saturday, the Spartans dominated the singles matches against Grand Canyon University (4-6), ending in a 4-2 victory.

Singles players Syllbie Gauvain, Laura Malsert, Jackie Wagner, and Savannah Sendar all earned singles wins against the Antelopes.

Other than Gauvain winning her singles match, Sunday was different. She was the only team member to put the Spartans on the board against Cal State Fullerton (5-1).

The Titans topped the Spartans 2-1 in doubles, earning the first point of the match. In Singles, it was Titans all the way other than Gauvain’s court No. 1 win. SJSU fell to CSUF, 4-1, dipping to 4-2 on the season.

Singles appeared to be the Spartan’s strongest suit. Head coach Chad Skorupka shared that they “will have some new doubles team for [their] next match,” according to SJSU Athletics.

Next up for the Spartans is a noon match on Friday, Feb. 16 against the University of San Francisco (1-2).
