San Jose State’s cheer team hosted its 2018 “Spirit of Sparta” Performance to fundraise for the upcoming USA Collegiate Championship competition.

With 20 cheer teams that performed, the event had an impressive showing in support of the fundraiser.

“We had a great turnout,” said head coach Kelvin Lam. “The attendance increases every year and the crowd had an amazing energy.”

In between cheers, SJSU cheer alumna and assistant coach Lanessa Lozano raffled off team gear. The cheer squad pumped up the crowd by occasionally throwing Spartan gear into the stands.

The cheer squad is expected to have enough money for its competition in large part to participation and support of the teams and the families that attended.

“It’s hard to know how much we raised tonight, until we count ticket sales, the raffle and the shoutouts,”  Lam said.

The money raised from this event will help SJSU’s cheer team go to the 2018 USA Collegiate Championship being held in Anaheim, Calif. on Feb. 24-25. The past two years the Spartans have taken second place in the four-year history of the event.
