Spartans drop third straight, get bottled by Beavers

By Mohamed Bafakih (@Moe_Fresco):

The second and final meeting of the season against a Pac-12 opponent is in the books for San Jose State as it was defeated by 19th-ranked Oregon State, 110-62, Sunday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore.

Scoring droughts and giving up large runs plagued the Spartans the entire game, and the opening quarter was a testament to the Beavers’ dominance on both ends of the floor.

OSU shot 80 percent from the field and capped off the first quarter with a 22-5 scoring run. It also held SJSU to just 23 percent shooting from the field to take a 36-13 advantage.

The Beavers had six players finish in double figures, led by 6-foot-5 senior Marie Gulich’s with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

A trio of Spartans also had double-digit scoring performances, as Myzhanique Ladd finished with 19 points, Taylor Turney with 16 and Fa-Ko-Fieme’a Hafoka with 11.

The Spartans managed to string a 7-0 run behind consecutive Beaver turnovers with just over five minutes before the half to cut it to 42-26, but OSU responded with a 9-0 run of their own and led 61-33 at the break.

OSU extended its lead to 37 at end the third quarter and kept pouring it on to defeat SJSU by 48.

The Spartans shot 29 percent for the game to the Beavers’ 64 percent and were outrebounded 54-27.

SJSU return home for the next three games and will welcome Nebraska on Dec. 17 at noon.
