SJSU swimming competes with nations elite

This past weekend, three San Jose State swimmers traveled to Columbus to compete at the U.S. Winter National Championships. All three made the finals in their respective strokes.

Senior Brittany Heng started off the weekend for the Spartans by swimming the 50 freestyle on Thursday. She was followed by senior Colleen Humel in the 100 backstroke and junior Brenna Bushey in the 100 butterfly on Friday.

On Thursday, Heng swam her morning race with a time of 23.05, placing her 22nd out of 43 swimmers and advancing her to the C final. In the finals she swam a time of 23.77 and finished in 24th place.

Follower her the next day was Humel with a time of 54.31 in the 100 back, placing her 14th out of 38 and advancing her to the B finals. She ended up finishing in 14th place with a finals time of 54.64.

Finally, the last SJSU swimmer to compete was Bushey who placed 17th in the preliminary swim out of 38 swimmers with a time of 54.26. After her C final swim time of 54.70, she finished the competition off in 19th place.

The swimmers will now get some time to rest before their next meet on Wednesday, Dec. 20th against UC Berkeley. The meet begins at noon at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Berkeley.
