Spartans erase 22-point deficit to beat Broncos

In a crosstown rivalry Tuesday night, the San Jose State (2-4) women’s basketball team overcame a 22-point deficit to defeat Santa Clara University (2-4) 71-66 to snap its three-game losing streak.

SJSU only led one time in this game, but when they did, they never gave it up.

After scoring her sixth straight point with 1:17 left in the second quarter, senior forward Morgan Mcguire and the Spartans found themselves down nearly two dozen points, a familiar situation they’ve been in before this season, but this time, there was a different result.

Leading the way for the Spartans was senior guard Myzhanique Ladd with an all-around performance, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

Adding to the charge was freshman forward Cydni Lewis who scored 14 points and shot 85 percent from the field.

The Broncos’ lead began to drift away after only making 50 percent of their layups down the line in the second half and failing to hit from beyond the arc as they shot just 21 percent.

SCU’s freshman forward Ashlyn Herlihy did all she could to try to lead her team to its second win of the season, nearly logging a double-double with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds in 33 minutes of action.

Another bright spot for Santa Clara University was Mcguire who shot 55 percent from the field and had 22 points and nine rebounds.

Moving forward, the Spartans look to stay in the win column as they host San Francisco State at home Friday at 7 p.m.
