San Jose squares up with Santa Clara in Silicon Valley battle

By James Kim (@Jdkim38):

The San Jose State Spartans (1-4) will play the Santa Clara Broncos (2-3) as the teams look to even out their early-season record.

Sophomore Taylor Turney and senior Myzhanique Ladd lead the Spartan team in points and playing minutes. Turney averaged 15.6 points per game over five games, while Myzhanique Ladd averaged 10.6.

The Spartans return to the county of Santa Clara after two games in Stockton as part of the Turkey Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the University of the Pacific. Tournament results were two losses for the visiting SJSU team, and its season record fell to a losing one by a difference of three games.

Point-guard play and three-point attempts are part of the Spartan strategy so far. The Spartans strategy necessitates rebounds, or a change in their game to prevent turnovers. Craighead, in a press-conference after the Hampton game, mentioned the physicality of their opponent as a part of the loss. Points scored by quarter, nonetheless, are skewed toward the Spartans’ first quarters of the game.

Head coach Jamie Craighead played both Spartan seniors, Myzhanique Ladd and Hallie Gennett for 137 minutes and 98 minutes respectively. Both players continue their statistical journey to 1,000 points as Spartan athletes. Myzhanique Ladd leads all Spartans in rebounds, with 38 this season.

The Broncos return from a trip to Illinois, losing a game to Northwestern and defeating the University of Illinois, Chicago in a low-scoring match.

Spartans play the Broncos at 7:00 p.m. on Nov. 28, at the SCU campus’ Leavey Center.
