Spartans get last chance at a win vs Wyoming

By Ernie Gonzalez (@superego1012):

The last Spartan win came back in September, and with a 10-game losing streak hanging over their heads, San Jose State (1-11, 0-7 MW) will get one final crack at a win Saturday at CEFCU Stadium against Wyoming (7-4, 5-2 MW).

The Cowboys are coming off a 13-7 defensive loss to a miracle Fresno State Bulldog team that is on its way to its first MW title game since 2013.

SJSU meanwhile is simply looking for another opportunity to play, and to head coach Brent Brennan, last week was last week.

“Any chance you’re going up against somebody as good as them, it’s a chance to prove yourself,” Brennan said on Monday.

Saturday will mark the last time a dozen Spartans put on a uniform, and although it might be a season to forget, Brennan wants it to be a game to remember.

“They’ve done a great job at battling through a really tough season … a new coaching staff … but to their credit they’ve been great,” Brennan said about his 12 seniors. “I’m excited for them to have their last game at Spartan [CEFCU] Stadium.”

On the other side, it’s likely to be Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen’s final regular season college football game.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported months ago that Allen would be the NFL’s 2018 number one draft pick, but he hasn’t lived up to that expectation this season.

Allen’s career 73.9 2016 adjusted QBR has dipped significantly to 49.7 in 2017, as he only has 13 touchdowns to six interceptions and 19 sacks through 10 games this season.

Allen did not play in last week’s home game against Fresno State and did not practice Tuesday. He remains questionable for Saturday’s season finale against the Spartans according to Robert Gagliardi of wyosports.net

It will be a big blow for the Cowboys if it’s a no-go for Allen, as Nick Smith, who’s only start of his three-year career at Wyoming came last week would have to grab the baton.

Wyoming is a quarterback-orchestrated offense carried by its defense, one that ranks 14th in the nation and hunts for turnovers.

Senior Jermaine Kelly won’t have as big a task as he did last week against Michael Gallup, arguably the nation’s best receiver, who he shut down for just 47 yards. Instead, Austin Conway, who leads the Cowboys with 493 receiving yards will be his glue.

Frank Ginda, who was credited with 11 tackles last week in Colorado State stands alone as the Mountain West conference’s all-time leader for tackles in a season with 163. He will have one more shot at increasing that total come game time.

Kickoff is at 2 p.m.
