Spartans fend off Broncos for series sweep

In the second and final game between San Jose State and the Santa Clara Broncos, the Spartans won 3-0 to cap off the season series sweep.

“It’s been a real long time coming, I’ve been trying to get that donut for a while now,” said senior goalkeeper Edward Berlin.  “I think it has been like 61 games so it felt great.  Especially with the crowd they had, I didn’t want to give them a single chance to cheer.”

The Broncos brought quite the crowd to Spartan territory, making it feel like it was actually an away game for SJSU.  But some friendly banter between the crowds proved that there was no shortage in Spartan spirit.

The first goal came in the middle of the first period from freshman forward Etinosa Obaseki for the Spartans. They went on to add two more from Nick Romeo and Schuyler Krawczuk all with Eddy Berlin making 47 saves for his first shutout in 61 games.

This was one of the more physical games for the Spartans this season. As expected, both teams laid on the body and drew a lot of penalties for both sides. There was a total of 21 penalties throughout the whole game and some big time hits.

Obaseki has found himself on a bit of a hot streak by getting a hat-trick in their last game against Santa Rosa, and added another goal in this matchup.

“I think a big thing for me is just getting prepared for a game,” Obaseki said. “Just focusing and thinking about the game and just things I can work on.”

SJSU will look to carry this sudden momentum into next weekend as they have two games against University of Loyola Marymount, a team they’ve seen once before and lost 5-2.

The first game is at Sharks Ice on Friday at 7:30p.m.
