Men’s water polo faces the number one team in the conference

By Lindsey Boyd (@lindsboyd3):

Men’s water polo is coming off a four game losing streak — its longest all season. The last game of the regular season won’t be any easier for No. 11 San Jose State (13-12, 1-3 GCC) as it hosts No. 5 University of the Pacific (15-5, 4-0 GCC).

The undefeated Tigers lead the Gold Coast Conference while SJSU is second to last in the six team conference. Last time the Spartans faced the Tigers at the Aggie Shootout on Sept. 17, SJSU had one of its largest losses of the season, 23-12.

Although, freshman Jacob Mercep had his first six point game against UOP and is No. 1 in the GCC for points and goals, UOP has three of the top ten scorers in the conference.

UOP also dominates the conference in assists having five of the top 10, while sophomore driver Ben Hauschild is the only Spartan in the top ten. Defensively, Hauschild is ranked No. 2 with 2.39 steals per game.

In terms of goalie match-up, sophomore TJ Palmer has just nine saves less than John Hedges. They have 147 and 158 respectively.

The game starts at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. and marks the last match before the conference tournament begins Nov. 17.
