Spartans face middle-of-the-pack teams on road

By Taylor Lupetti (@tayclupetti):

The start of November means the  the volleyball season winding down.  With three weeks left in regular season, the team is headed on the road to New Mexico on Thursday and Las Vegas on Saturday.

SJSU (15-8, 7-5 MW) swept Fresno State last Thursday, but got swept by San Diego State on Saturday.  Despite the loss, the Spartans held third place in the Mountain West Conference, but are now tied with San Diego State.

Tied for sixth place in the conference, the University of New Mexico Lobos (13-12, 5-7 MW) are looking to extend their two-match winning streak this weekend.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas Rebels (8-17, 4-8 MW) are tied for ninth place in conference alongside the Fresno State Bulldogs.

Despite a loss last Saturday for the Spartans, the win against Fresno promises a winning season for the Spartans, an achievement that has not been seen since 2006. The win against the Bulldogs furthered SJSU’s most wins since the 2012 season as well.

Still injured, junior outside hitter Giulia Gavio will not be taking the court with her team this weekend. While Gavio is one of the team’s star players, the game plan and line up has been well-adjusted until further notice.

Sophomore outside hitter Fernanda Vido is still going strong after being back from her injury and has been carrying her team to the end of the season. Vido has the third highest number of kills on the team at 224.

The match against New Mexico starts at 6 p.m. on Thursday. SJSU will then head over to UNLV where it will take on the Rebels at 12 p.m.
