Friedrich, Cooper lead Spartans to top five finish

Coming into the final day of the Stanford Intercollegiate, San Jose State was in sitting in seventh place 21 strokes out. The Spartans passed up Pepperdine and the University of Washington in thanks to strong performances from Alexandra Cooper and Franziska Friedrich to end the day and competition in fifth.

Friedrich was the Spartans top performer in the tournament shooting two-over in the final round. Friedrich was clicking on all cylinders the first day shooting two-under 69 and was tied for fourth after day one.

The junior ended up tying for 15th place at five-over par 218.

Cooper also had a strong outing as well shooting three-over par.

The junior put up consistent numbers through each round scoring a 72, 72, and 74 in the final round. Cooper’s strong final round included four birdies and eight pars to give her a second career top 20 finish.

Abegail Arevalo struggled in the first round of the tournament shooting a seven-over 78. She quickly turned it around shooting 6 shots better on the second of the tournament and had the team’s low score of the day.

In the final round Arevelo had 14 pars and four bogeys on the day. The junior tied for 35th overall as she shot 12-over 225.

Another notable performer was Elizabeth Schultz who had five birdies in the final round as she shot two over 73. The Spartans had the fourth best team score of the day.

UCLA trailed Stanford by seven strokes heading into the final round.The Bruins dominated the final round as they were the only team to shoot under par in the round, shooting nine-under 275 to win the competition.

Patty Tavantanki led the Bruins comeback notching six birdies in the final round.The junior had 14 birdies in all and were the most from any player in the tournament. Tavantanki was one of four Bruins that finished inside the top eleven.

The Spartans will look to carry their momentum from the final round, into the the Las Vegas Collegiate that begins on Sunday.
