Spartans fend off Wolf Pack for another win

By Ryan Carlson (@ryancarlson88):

After taking over first place in the Mountain West Conference last weekend, the San Jose State  women’s soccer team (8-5-1, 5-1-1 MW) continued its hot streak beating the University of Nevada, Reno (1-14-0, 0-7-0 MW)  2-0.

The Spartans have now won seven of their last nine games.

SJSU dominated the possession the first half, yet couldn’t find the back of the net .

“Frustrating first half because we were in their zone for basically the whole half but we got it done in the second,” said Spartans junior goalkeeper Paige Simoneau.

No score after the first half, but only one minute into the second the Spartans got on the board. It was an own goal by Nevada off of a corner kick for San Jose State, putting them on top 1-0.

In the 62nd minute, senior midfielder Yaritza Arista roped in a second goal in the top left corner putting the Spartans up them up 2-0.

“I saw Bella going to the ball and I saw she was going to lay off so I just went and took the shot,” Arista said.

With the win, the Spartans  increase their lead as first place in the conference but have a tough task two days from now as the second place University of Nevada, Las Vegas come to town.

“Treat every game and every team the same but it will be exciting because they are the second place team,” said coach Lauren Hanson.

The game with definite conference championship implications is scheduled to kick off on Sunday at noon.
