WAC play brings two-game homestand for Spartans

The San Jose State men’s soccer team is back at home this week.

After a two-game road trip that began with a tie to Utah Valley and ended with a 1-0 loss to Seattle, SJSU (2-7-1, 0-1-1 WAC) will look to turn its fortune around as it hosts UNLV and Grand Canyon University.

The Spartans are currently eighth in the Western Athletic Conference and have yet to win a road match this season. In fact, the team’s last victory came against Saint Mary’s on Sept. 7, nearly a month ago.

On the attack, SJSU will continue to rely heavily on senior forward Jeremy Romero. Through 10 games, Romero leads all Spartans in goals, points, shots, shot percentage and shots on goal.

Defensively, the team hopes to continue its improved play. After giving up five goals to USF on Sept. 22, the Spartans have clamped down on their opponents and allowed just three goals in as many games.

The Spartans will need to be at their best defensively against UNLV, as the Rebels have scored eight combined goals in their last two matches.

For Grand Canyon, San Jose State will need to look out for Niki Jackson. The senior forward has managed to notch at least two points in four of 10 matches for GCU.

Start time against UNLV is set for Friday at 1 p.m. and at 3 p.m. on Sunday against Grand Canyon University.
