Former Spartan suing two coaches over discrimination

By Kavin Mistry (@kavinm95):

A lawsuit has been filed by former San Jose State men’s basketball player Gary Williams Jr. against ex-head coach Dave Wojcik and ex-assistant coach Tyler Ojanen for homophobic remarks and discrimination, according to the Mercury News.

Wojcik, who resigned as head coach this summer, left the program because of “personal reasons” and did not elaborate beyond wanting to spend more time with his family.

Ojanen is also no longer with the team as new head coach Jean Prioleau has hired his own coaching staff.

At the moment, there is no link between this case and the reason why Wojcik resigned from the team after having one of the most successful seasons since 2010, and the best since the team joined the Mountain West in 2013.

This is not the first racial incident that has struck SJSU. Just last year, the result of the hate-crime trial from 2013 of three former students had found them guilty of misdemeanor battery on a African-American student in the dorms.

The Spartans finished the 2016-17 season with 14 wins and a roster optimistic of a Mountain West-tournament run, but lost in the first round against Utah State.

Williams graduated from San Jose State last year after completing his senior season on the men’s basketball team.

Neither the team or Williams has commented on the situation, but we will continue to update the story when more information becomes available.
