Spartans head to Colorado to face Air Force

The women’s volleyball team is getting back to work by traveling to Colorado Springs this weekend to face Air Force.

SJSU (8-4) played Air Force (7-7) two times last season and both games ended in a victory for SJSU. The last time the Falcons defeated the Spartans was in 2015 and are 4-7 all-time against SJSU.

The Falcons will start conference play on Thursday when they play the University of Nevada, Reno. SJSU went up against UNR on Tuesday for its first conference game and lost 3-1.

Air Force sophomore outside hitter Denise Ssozi and freshman libero Alex King will be the players to watch on Saturday. Ssozi leads the Falcons with 209 kills, about a third of her team’s total. King has about a fifth of her teams digs with 127.

Because of Ssozi, junior middle blocker Nandyala Gama, who leads the Spartans in blocks,  is going to have to be ready at the net.

Going into this weekend, sophomore outside hitter Fernanda Vido is at the top of the stat sheet for the Spartans in kills with 164 of the team’s 637. Junior libero Luiza Andrade is going to be another player to monitor with 203 of the Spartans’ 680 digs.

After recording her fourth double-double of the season on Tuesday, junior outside hitter Giulia Gavio is third in kills and fourth in digs for the Spartans.

This will be the second Mountain West conference game for the Spartans this season and is set to begin at 11 a.m on Saturday.
