Wolfpack take down Spartans in conference opener

By Taylor Lupetti (@tayclupetti):

It was a rough night on the road for the women’s volleyball team as they lost to the University of Nevada, Reno Wolfpack 3-1 in their first conference play game of the season.

After beating the Santa Clara University Broncos on Saturday, SJSU (8-4) looked like it was picking up where it had left off with it’s, but it was not meant to be Tuesday evening.

The Wolfpack (3-10) struggled during their non-conference slate, but put up a tough wall for the Spartans tonight. With 30 total errors, SJSU just wasn’t able to get the ball where it was needed.

The Spartans lost the first set of the night, which would end up being the closest, 26-24 but bounced back in the second set to win 25-21.  The Wolfpack won the third set the same way they lost the second, winning 25-21, and returned for the final set overpowering the Spartans 25-16.

Leading the Spartans with 14 kills was junior outside hitter Giulia Gavio.  Gavio’s team high was tied with UNR’s sophomore middle blocker Shayla Hoeft who lead her team in kills as well.

Spartans junior libero Luiza Andrade had the most digs of the night with 18 of the match’s 57.

The team will be traveling to Colorado this weekend where it is scheduled to play the Air Force at 1 p.m.
