Spartans swinging in right direction at Ptarmigan Ram Classic

By Austin Badzik (@austinbadzik15):

After losing its best player last year, the SJSU women’s golf team was expected to take a step back this season. However, Franziska Friedrich and the rest of the team expected differently.

The Spartans got off to a slow start as they were in fourth place and five strokes back after round one.

In day two of the tournament, the Spartans had a huge day as they piled up 19 birdies in the second round of the tournament, passing up San Francisco, Indiana and UC Irvine.

Abegail Arevalo is the team’s leading scorer as she has put up staggering numbers through the first two rounds. Arevalo is -3 through the first two rounds and has the second-best score in the tournament as she trails only Suthavee Chanachai from New Mexico State who is shooting -11 and sits atop the leaderboards.

However the Spartans haven’t missed a beat, the team is shooting -1 heading into the final round, with a three-stroke lead over New Mexico State.

If the team plays anything like it did today, it should be able to hold onto its lead and secure its first tournament win of the season.
