Men’s basketball could be losing its best player

Things were beginning to look up for men’s basketball at SJSU, but now, star forward Brandon Clarke is considering transferring to another school as he enters his junior year.

News first broke Monday evening that Clarke asked for permission to speak with other programs across the country, per multiple sources.

Clarke’s request comes just weeks after new head coach Jean Prioleau was introduced.

Prioleau said after the press conference that he and Clarke were going to have a one-on-one sit down and discuss his role and future with the program.

Whether that meeting happened is unknown, but assuming it did, Clarke likely informed Prioleau that he was considering transferring out of SJSU.

Among the schools Clarke is interested in are Oregon, Cal, Utah, Michigan and Oklahoma, according to Eli Boettger of USA Today.

Should Clarke decide to transfer, he will have to sit out a year because of NCAA regulations.

And for SJSU, the loss of Clarke would be instrumental as he is coming off an All-Mountain West First Team season with averages of 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds on 60 percent shooting.

Though nothing is set in stone for Clarke to be on his way out of the Bay Area, it’s safe to speculate he will meet some of his desired schools in the coming weeks as the next academic year is currently underway for many schools already.
