Home-court advantage — new facilities looming for SJSU athletics

By Sandeep Chandok (@sandeepchandok):

There’s no place like home, or so the saying goes, and this year, a few teams at San Jose State will receive new home facilities.

A few already have.

Last year, SJSU agreed to invest $135 million into its athletics programs including new home grounds for many of its teams.

The Spartan Soccer Complex is almost complete in phase 2 of construction and will be ready in the coming month.

Mountain West-tournament champs women’s tennis should have its new courts by October this fall.

Still to come is a stadium for the reigning Mountain West Champion softball team which had to play last season’s home games at Mission College in Santa Clara.

The softball stadium could be completed prior to the season’s start, though that is highly doubtful, and there is no guarantee or designated date as to when it will be finished.

Another facility undergoing construction is the aquatics center which will be an indoor grounds complete with an indoor track. This facility is expected to be done toward fall 2018 before the next academic year.

And though there has been no word or rumors yet, a new football stadium could possibly be coming in the near future, as CEFCU Stadium, previously Spartan Stadium, has been around since 1933 and seen renovations a few times since.

When these home turfs are in place, teams, fans and students will have something to look forward to.
