Dominant pitching lowers magic number to 1

By Daniel Reedy:

To almost no one’s surprise, a Spartan arm led the team to yet another victory.

Katelyn Linford hurled a shutout to beat UNLV as the Spartans are now just one game away from a Mountain West title.

Linford didn’t walk a single batter and struck out five for her conference-leading 23 win.

The Spartan offense was stifled by Morgan Ettinger who allowed just one hit finishing with three walks and five strikeouts.

But that one hit made all the difference as freshman second baseman Cassidy Clark knocked in the game-winning run in the sixth inning.

SJSU’s offense certainly isn’t satisfied with the one-run performance but yet again the Spartans won with undeniably outstanding pitching.

The Spartans need just one more win to clinch the Mountain West Conference Championship.

The series continues May 12 at 6 p.m. with Game 2.
