Spartans overcome 5-run deficit

By Sandeep Chandok

It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish.

After going down 5-0 in the first inning, SJSU chipped away at New Mexico’s lead over the next six frames to win the series opener, 7-6.

Sophomore infielder Madison Aurin scored what would be the game-winning run on a wild pitch by the Lobos (20-21, 6-10 MW) in the top of the seventh.

Aurin was instrumental to the Spartans’ (30-15, 10-6 MW) comeback, logging two hits, three runs and an RBI for the day.

For New Mexico, the wild pitch was one of four errors in the contest along with a bases-loaded balk that made it a 6-3 game.

After striking out with two on and one out early in the game, junior outfielder Brittany Abacherli singled, stole second and scored the game-tying run in the top of the sixth off a Chelsea Jenner sacrifice fly.

Colette Riggs picked up her eighth win of the season after replacing Katelyn Linford in the first inning.

With two games remaining in the series and eight overall in the season, SJSU will need the fight they had today in every contest as the postseason nears.

Game two begins tomorrow at 12 p.m.
