Leander leads Spartans though tournaments

My Leander won again, her second tournament victory of the season.

The SJSU senior won the individual title with a five-under 211 at the Meadow Club Intercollegiate tournament in Fairfax, California, on Tuesday.

The team finished the tournament in sixth place with a final standing of 891.

San Diego State took first place in the tournament at 870, followed by Brigham Young at 874, Illinois at 881 and UC Berkeley at 882.

Leander won the Intercollegiate by three strokes, shooting a three-under 69 during the final round. Kendra Dalton of BYU and Siyun Liu of Illinois were tied for second place in individuals. Both players finished with two-under 214.

The Spartans took first place in the Gold Rush tournament in Seal Beach, California, on February 28; this marked the team’s first tournament win of 2017.

Spartan golfer Abegail Arevalo finished in the top-20 for the second consecutive and third overall time; Arevalo had finished in the top-10 at the Gold Rush tournament. Arevalo and Leander were the two Spartan golfers to finish in the top-20 individually.

Playing as individuals, Spartan golfers Arielle Caronna and Fanny Johansson finished 73rd at 247 and 75th at 255, respectively.

In addition to Leander’s second (of 13) consecutive individual tournament win of 2017, the Spartans took their second team win of 2017 at the Gold Rush tournament.

The team will take a two-week break from competing until the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in Maui, Hawaii March 27-29.
