San Jose State ran out of time during it’s match against No. 19 Wagner. As the last buzzer sounded, Wagner stole the game by a narrow 5-4 win.
The game was the textbook definition of a neck-and-neck battle as No. 12 SJSU (7-13) answered every Seahawks’ goal.
Wagner scored the first goal of the match while the Spartans were down a player with 5:26 left in the first quarter.
Two minutes later, SJSU’s Sheila Jensen matched the Seahawks, scoring at even strength to tie the score 1-1.
The pattern of back-and-forth shot attempts repeated throughout all four quarters. When Wagner scored, SJSU came back to returned the favor.
After the first period closed with Wagner ahead 3-2, Spartan senior Donia Momen tied it up at 3-all to end the half with the only goal of the second frame.
Following the tug-a-war pattern of the game, Wagner edged ahead in the beginning of the third period 4-3; but Spartan driver McKenna Yates tugged back on the rope and evened out the game once again at 4-4.
Both sides were scoreless in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. With 1:53 left on the clock, an exclusion was called on Momen to send Wagner on the powerplay.
The Seahawks took advantage of the man-advantage and scored the last goal to win the game 5-4.
Spartan goalie, Katelyn Thompson was much to thank for holding the Seahawks to only five goals. She had eight saves in comparison to Wagner goalie Emily Riddle who had five.
The Spartans will duel again in the water against Whittier at 4:45 p.m.
