It took less than two months for the SJSU women’s golf team to win their first tournament of 2017 with an impressive 11-stroke victory at the Gold Rush tournament in Seal Beach, California.

In addition to the team’s second win in team play this season, the team also won the Ptarmigan Fall Classic last September.

Two players finished in the top-10 in individual scoring at the Gold Rush.

Senior My Leander finished second overall over the weekend, posting three consecutive scores of 69 to finish nine-under par. Leander was the only Spartan to shoot under par for the tournament.

During the final round, she carded four birdies and 13 pars with a bogey on hole-18 being her only dropped shot of the day.

Her performance helped the Spartans distance themselves from the other 13 teams competing in the tournament, including BYU which is ranked no. 31 in the country.

Sophomore Abigail Arevalo notched her first collegiate finish in the top-10, tying for seventh place at three-over par.

Fellow sophomores Franziska Friedrich and Alexandra Cooper finished tied for 21st and 39th respectively. Senior Elizabeth Schultz tied for 25th at 10-over par.

Head coach John Doorman said the team’s new practice facility is already having a positive impact on the team as evidenced by the Spartans’ improved bunker play.

The team’s next tournament will be the Bay Area Intercollegiate, which will be played at the Meadow Club in Fairfax on March 6 and 7.
