Craighead joins history with win over Air Force

By Kavin Mistry:

It was quite the week for head coach Jamie Craighead and the Spartans as they beat rival Fresno State in a thrilling overtime comeback on Wednesday and Craighead joined the history books with her 100th career win Saturday against Air Force.

The women’s basketball team has certainly not had the picture perfect season many had hoped for coming into the year, but the team is catching fire at the right time.

Winners of three straight on the road, the Spartans are starting to settle into a groove offensively. The team scored over 75 points for the second straight game and senior guard Dezz Ramos is leading the charge. The SJSU sharpshooter scored 61 points over the two games last week, earning her Mountain West Player of the Week.

The 83-67 win over the Falcons came on the heels of having to play without forward Jasmine Smith, who is the team’s second-leading scorer at 11.7 PPG.

On the coaching side, Craighead is now tied for third in SJSU wins history. The win is also her 49th here at San Jose State alone.

“It was all about coming home with a win without having Jazz [Smith],” said head coach Jamie Craighead postgame.

The road to 100 wins has not been the easiest to come by for coach, but she said after the game how proud she is of the group she gets to work with and the resolve her team showed when facing adversity.

After the game, the team dumped a bucket of gatorade on Craighead in the locker room to celebrate.

“It feels great,” Craighead said. “It was a little cold and wet in the locker room after the game but it was a lot of fun.”

As strange as it sounds, the Spartans next game being on the road might be what they need.

SJSU has thrived away from the Event Center as of late and will be facing a struggling Utah State team Wednesday night.
